Issue date: 2026-05-06T18:25+00:00

Apparent, or feels like, temperatures this afternoon are expected to top 108 degrees across Starr, Brooks, and northern Hidalgo counties. Peak Heat Indices may reach 112 or 113 degrees briefly late this afternoon into early this evening when peak daytime heating and evening humidity recovery begins. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives, neighbors, workers, and the elderly. Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit exercise and strenuous activities. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. Death is possible to unprepared people and pets. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
